Abstract

Atualmente, um dos grandes problemas de saúde pública e um dos maiores desafios da geriatria é a Doença deAlzheimer (DA), caracterizada como uma demência, ou seja, um comprometimento amplo das funções cognitivas. O indivíduo acometido apresenta dificuldade ou total incapacidade de realizar atividades comuns da vida diária (AVD), comprometendo não só a sua qualidade de vida, mas também a qualidade de vida dos familiares. A Doença de Alzheimer é a forma mais comum de demência(Cooper, 1991), acometendo de 8% a 15% da população com mais de 65 anos (Ritchie & Kildia, 1995) e é a quarta causa mais freqüente de morte em países desenvolvidos (Clark & Goate, 1993), perdendo apenas para as doenças cardiovasculares, as complicações pulmonares e o câncer.
