Abstract

Os idosos têm representado uma porção cada vez maior da população brasileira e mundial. No Brasil, a faixa etária adotada para definir o indivíduo idoso é o grupo com idade igual ou superior a 60 anos, conforme a Lei Nº8.842/96 (NETTO, 2001). As pessoas idosas apresentam um processo irreversível e progressivo de deterioração das funções orgânicas, que pode estar associado à grande variedade de doenças e alterações ambientais que potencializam o desenvolvimento de maior fragilidade e incapacidade de viverem de forma independente (LIMA, 2004).
