Abstract

Nas últimas décadas, o emprego de plantas medicinais tem sido largamente difundido, tanto nos países desenvolvidos, como em desenvolvimento, refletindo o reconhecimento do potencial da Fitoterapia para a expansão dos serviços de saúde, bem como a tendência generalizada dos consumidores em utilizarem preferencialmente produtos de origem natural (CALIXTO, 2000). Verifica-se, porem, que o aumento progressivo da demanda de plantas e/ou preparações de origem vegetal como recurso terapêutico, associada à falta de fiscalização efetiva que garanta desde a exploração racional dos recursos naturais empregados como matéria prima, até a dispensação do produto acabado, contribuíram para a disponibilidade e fácil acesso da sociedade a produtos ditos medicinais de origem vegetal, muitas vezes, indesejáveis, desnecessários e/ou perigosos, sem garantia de recuperação ou prevenção da saúde do usuário (POZETTI, 1995).
