Abstract

It was carried out a descriptive study that aimed to describe occupational exposures to biological material occurring in Medio Araguaia/MT region, involving ten cities. We analyzed the notifications contained in SINAN NET (System for Information of Notification Complications of Santa Catarina State) from 2007 to 2011, totaling 69 reporting forms. The highest number of accidents occurs in 2011 and accounted for 40.6% of notifications. Patients were predominantly female (82.6%), and lumen needles were the mainly agents of 62.4% of the reported accidents. Professionals with less than two years of experience presented the highest number of accidents notifications with biological material (33.3%), and a minority reported that had not used the equipment of individual protection (5.8%). It is believed that the knowledge about the factors that cause accidents can serve as a reference for adoption of measures to prevent such situations.
